We are the Citizen Scientists - Participation from the user's point of view

Date: 18th of February 2016
Location: Austrian Citizen Science Conference 2016 - “Citizen Science - Quo vadis?"
Topic: We are the Citizen Scientists - Participation from the user's point of view

Abstract: Although even the term "Citizen Science" consists of two parts, the term and also the method is often viewed in a one-sided way. In practice, the focus is often on the "science" alone, while the "citizens," without whom Citizen Science per se would not be possible, are often only perceived as a contributing factor.

In the session on participation in Citizen Science, we, as active Citizen Scientists and developers of the Citizen Science Tool-Set SPOTTERON, would like to focus on Citizen Scientists and quality criteria from the user's point of view. Based on 4 archetypes, we present the most important core aspects that a Citizen Science project should fulfill from the user's perspective and what these can mean in practice for the operation of the project itself. We will look at the wide range of interfaces between science and users, from the Citizen Science Tool in your pocket to what 2-way communication can actually mean for a project.

At the same time, the lecture will also show the necessary resources that more intensive participation of Citizen Scientists entails, what this involves in the ongoing operation of a project in practice and how far community functions in smartphone apps and online applications can contribute to the overall project.
