Collaboration for Effective Sea Action: Release of the EU Marine Citizen Science App COSEA

COSEA is a collaborative, participatory, and community-driven project, funded by the European Union. It focuses on marine environments, marine species, and their habitats, as well as on various innovative approaches to their protection: TRANSEATION and EFFECTIVE are the two science projects that collaborate within COSEA with individual methods and tools in marine science.

Additional partners engaged in sea protection or marine economy (such as environmental groups, associations, youth projects, stakeholders, and other participants) are invited to collaborate and co-use the COSEA App for observations, data collection, and community building related to sea and coastal protection.

If you are interested in collaborating or would like more details, please contact us at: collaboration@cosea.app

Science Design for COSEA

At SPOTTERON, we crafted the visual identity of COSEA, setting the stage for its future communication. Our adaptive logo design is a standout feature, offering partners the flexibility to customize it according to their specific needs. This way, each project can use a logo variant that perfectly aligns with their unique focus.

COSEA Citizen Science App

SPOTTERON is part of the Consortium and has launched the first prototype of the COSEA Citizen Science App, available for Android and iOS. This interactive participatory toolkit allows Citizen Scientists to submit data, including photos and observations of coastal habitats and species, activities, reports on pollution, infrastructure, and the blue economy. Scientists from TRANSEATION and EFFECTIVE will use the Citizen Science data to understand the impacts and drivers affecting marine environments, fostering a healthy relationship between humans and our oceans.

We all share a deep care for our seas and their resilience in changing times. With the approach of the COSEA App, collaborating projects can help strengthen a healthy relationship between humans and our oceans and learn more about marine protection, social impacts and sustainable use of natural resources. Marine Scientists and Citizen Scientists can share their observations and interact, comment, and exchange with others in the user community, or simply respond to contributions of a friend in the App with a heart&like.

About TRANSEATION

TRANSEATION is an EU-funded initiative by CTN that includes partners such as ECOOCEAN, OceanEcostructures, cmcc and many more (find all partners here). The primary goal of TRANSEATION is to show how certain structures, both natural and man-made, can effectively protect and restore marine ecosystems.

These so-called hybrid blue-grey infrastructures represent a new approach that combines natural solutions with digital technology, considering the social implications of these interventions. The project focuses on protecting our oceans and coasts, as well as ensuring oceans can continue to provide society with their numerous benefits.

About EFFECTIVE

EFFECTIVE, a 4-year Horizon Europe CTN project with the mission to protect and restore the Mediterranean Sea, aims to establish large-scale marine protected areas (contributing to 30% by 2030). Marine ecosystem restoration and various observation and monitoring scales enable an integrated and innovative approach that involves governance, participation, and social engagement.

The main objective is to develop a comprehensive scientific knowledge base and practical guidance for applying Ecosystem-Based Management to protect and restore the EU's Mediterranean Blue Natural Capital. This involves combining scientific research, technological nature-based solutions, and digitalization.

EFFECTIVE Partners

Both the Horizon Europe projects EFFECTIVE and TRANSEATION culminate in the COSEA Citizen Science App, which is geared towards marine and biodiversity restoration and protection, integrating communication and community-building tools for both citizens and scientists.

We are thrilled to be a partner in the COSEA project and are already curious about the next few years! Stay tuned by following our updates on our website and social media platforms (LinkedinMastodon, Bluesky, Instagram, Twitter).
