Project Internationalization Toolkit

Successful Citizen Science projects can grow beyond their starting situation, or start right on an international scale. When running a Citizen Science project on an international scale with multiple project partners collaborating, the necessary tools must be in place.

With the SPOTTERON Project Internationalization Toolkit (PIT), the project consortium members can each access and maintain data independently, and manage all Citizen Science and community activities within the own country.

Making Internationalization easy by creating project partnerships

Wider scale research projects often involve a range of partner institutions or organizations from different countries. Either having grown into adding additional partners to an existing Citizen Science project, or involving a larger project consortium from the start like in Horizon Europe / Horizon 2020  - it can be essential for an effective project management structure to reflect that geographical diversity also in the toolkit, when there are multinational partnerships in place.

SPOTTERON Project Internationalization Toolkit Structure Chart for international Citizen Science Apps

The SPOTTERON Project Internationalization Toolkit for multinational or global Citizen Science Apps enables to have project partners from different countries working together. Each partner in the international research team can log into the Data Administration Interface, where all user submission from the Citizen Science App come together. Each national project-partner can see and manage the contributions from their own country, including the data export of the national data-set.
The core components in the package are:

Project Internationalization Toolkit

National Data Administration Access & Data Export

Each national project partner can access the data administration for all spots and content created in their country, and export them anytime

Community management tools on a per-country basis

Direct management options for all user comments and community contributions from a country

Multi-language compatibility of the project's Apps

Public Apps can be extended by different language translations on all levels for content, interface, and data submission dialogs

Filtered input options for users based on GEO location

Option to display input options filtered by the location of a user's data submission, e.g. for species or social attributes per country or even region

Outreach and communication tools for users per country

Ability to send custom Push Messages for project communication, updates, and outreach to all users on a per-country basis

Overhead / Coordinator Administrator Account

The main partner like e.g. the coordinator of a consortium has overhead access with the ability to see all contributions and messages from all disseminated countries

Co-branding options, Links & Logo representation

Inclusion of partner logos, custom partner descriptions and link buttons for each country partner in the project's Apps

Self-maintained Project Website Sub-Section (Package B)

Option to host custom website sections for national project partners with self-maintenance access via the website's content management system (CMS)

With the extended toolkit for project internationalization, Citizen Science Apps on the SPOTTERON platform can be scaled to multinational or even global partnerships. With having the right tools in place, work loads can be distributed among the international partners within a project instead of generating overheads on the coordinator / project lead's side. Via the per-country self-maintenance access to data and community contributions, each country can not only work independently, but also communicate without language barriers to their national user group.

To support every partner in an international Citizen Science project and to provide the reliable and always-maintained IT infrastructure within a larger project's usage and exposure level, we have calculated a fixed-price package for emerging partnerships. As a service provider, we can invoice every partner individually, resulting in no organizational efforts necessary for the project's lead partner. With the SPOTTERON Project Internationalization Toolkit, new partners can easily join a project for running and promoting the Citizen Science App in their own country, while having full access to all national data contributions and community activities. With the lead project partner's permission, we fully take care of the rest - from data access setup over technical support to yearly invoicing.

Removing language barriers in data management, communication and outreach

Citizen Science and public engagements always foster by communication, especially in digital Apps with a user focus. When running an interactive international App, users will communicate in their native language, asking questions, providing feedback or simply to exchange with others. With the SPOTTERON Project Internationalization Toolkit running in a multiple-actor project, each partner can take complete care of their national user base and communicate with participants in the national native language.

Shared data - shared responsibilities in international Citizen Science projects

The clear partnership structure offered in the SPOTTERON Project Internationalization Toolkit enables clear responsibilities among the consortium or group. By the ability of each involved partner to manage their own dataset and communicate directly with the national user base, responsibilities can be better defined, and also data sharing agreements can cover the collaboration in a much clearer way.
